Registration is now open for the 20th annual International Street Medicine Symposium!

The Street Medicine Institute is pleased to announce that registration is open for the 20th annual International Street Medicine Symposium, to be held September 15 – 18, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. We are grateful to our local co-host Care Beyond the Boulevard for helping to organize this 20th anniversary symposium.

The International Street Medicine Symposium (ISMS) is the world’s premier educational event dedicated to the health care of rough-sleeper and unsheltered homeless populations. Each year, ISMS offers an impressive slate of homeless health care experts from around the globe presenting clinical topics, innovations, research outcomes, and best practices relevant to street medicine through the popular format mix of large-group lectures, interactive small-group presentations and workshops, and poster presentations. All people working in the area of health and homelessness are invited, and we encourage and celebrate the diversity of lived expertise and professional roles represented among participants.

The symposium will be held at the Kansas City Convention Center in on September 16 – 18, 2024, with an optional pre-symposium Street Medicine 101 workshop Sunday, September 15.

ISMS 2024 will showcase the work of Care Beyond the Boulevard (CBB), a completely independent street medicine organization that has continually evolved since its inception. CBB is unique from many other street medicine organizations due to its independence from any hospital systems, clinics, or schools of medicine. We collaborate with multiple systems in all these realms daily, but our governance is independent.

Our organization has grown from a one night a week street team into a multi-disciplinary program that provides street medicine, multiple clinics per week, and medical respite. We employ 10 full-time staff and 3 contract workers and have over 200 volunteers who provide healthcare to thousands of Kansas Citians. Volunteers are the heart of our work and contribute to the consistency and quality of care we deliver. We offer patients medical care, physical therapy, case management, medical respite, point of care labs, vision screenings, and dental care.

Due to the geography of Kansas City, which straddles the Missouri and Kansas state line, CBB faces unusual issues that our team works to navigate routinely: multi-state licensure, neighboring states with vastly different laws, one state with Medicaid expansion and one without, opposite abortion laws, opposing laws on marijuana, and varying regulations on provider practice regulations for PAs and NPs.

We are honored to be the host for this year's symposium and are excited to share the work done by CBB and the collaborations in place to deliver care to the streets of Kansas City.

-Jaynell (KK) Assmann, APRN, Founder and CEO, Care Beyond the Boulevard

Registration Information

Inclusive Registration Rates for 2024

The street medicine community includes individuals and organizations of all types, sizes, and budgets and we want all of you to be able to participate in the 20th annual International Street Medicine Symposium. This year, the Street Medicine Institute (SMI) is offering three paid registration tiers to help enable our colleagues with recent lived experience of homelessness and our colleagues from countries that are offered free SMI membership to register for free.

As a non-profit organization dependent upon this income for our sustainability, SMI asks that you register at the price tier best reflecting your resources and the value you place on participation in the symposium. Paying at the highest tier possible for you allows SMI to include colleagues who have fewer financial resources. As you weigh the most appropriate tier for you and your team, please factor in that ISMS 2024 will include approximately 20 hours of educational content. Also, please remember:

Members of the Street Medicine Institute receive a 50% discount on ISMS registration and the Street Medicine 101 pre-symposium workshop.
