UPMC accepting inquiries for Street Medicine FellowshipUPMC welcomes applicants who have completed primary care (FM, IM), Emergency Medicine, or Psychiatry residencies to apply for the UPMC Mercy Street Medicine Fellowship. This non-accredited one year fellowship is the first of its kind that will specifically focus on street medicine – care delivered directly to the homeless camps and outdoor settings where rough sleepers live. The fellowship is sponsored by the UPMC Mercy Department of Internal Medicine in collaboration with Pittsburgh Mercy’s Operation Safety Net under the directorship of Dr. James Withers (founder of the Street Medicine Institute). Fellows will develop both expertise in the practice of street medicine and the leadership skills to create and run their own street medicine programs. An emphasis will be placed on the improved care of unsheltered homeless patients within a large inner-city teaching hospital. A portion of the fellowship will involve travel to other cities within the global street medicine network to deepen their understanding of the best practices within this new field of medicine.
